Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is the modality of massage that is similar to Swedish massage, but differs with the use of deeper pressure. The focus of this massage is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia (protective layer that surrounds muscles, joints, and bones) which aims to release chronic muscle tension.
Wondering if you should request an appointment for a deep tissue massage? Below are some of the benefits as to why a deep tissue massage might be the right choice for you!
Pain management. If you have conditions like sciatica or osteoarthritis and as a result are suffering from chronic pain, a deep tissue massage can be an effective way to manage your pain.
Increased movement. Scar tissues form on all parts of the body after an injury has healed. Sometimes scarring occurs deeper in the body such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Deep tissue massages can help alleviate the pain making it easier to move more freely.
Improved heart function. A study published in the 2008 in the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine evaluated blood pressure and heart rate prior and after a 60 minute deep tissue massage. The result was lower systolic and diastolic pressure as well as heart rates around 10 beats less per minute.
Improved lung function. A 2017 study published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease showed how a one-time deep tissue massage engagement decreased residual volumes while inspiratory capacity and SpO2 increased; signaling a healthier functioning lung.
